Said by members of the family to have been despondent because of ill health, John R. Pierce, 57, Micola farmer, died at his home on Monday of last week from a bullet wound in the head, self-inflicted. It was from a .22 caliber rifle, the ball from which entered his forehead.
Pierce had been a patient at times in the Blytheville hospital and also was reported to have grieved a great deal over the loss of his son in the recent world war. He had been a resident of the Micola community for 36 years, where funeral services were held Thursday of last week, with interment in Mt. Zion Cemetery near Steele.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ethel Pierce, seven sons and four daughters, who are: Howard Pierce of New Rochelle, N.J., John R. Jr., Joe H., Franklin, Harold, Donald and Jerry Wayne Pierce, all of the Micola neighborhood; Mrs. Elsie Sloan and Misses Marie, Laverne and Shelby Jean Pierce of Micola. Two brothers, Jim of Pinson, Tenn. and Wiley Pierce of Benton, Harbor, Mich., also survive, along with six sisters, Mrs. Nora Bird and Mrs. Elmer Douglas of Caruthersville, Mrs. Mattie Bowen and Mrs. Vester Stout of Essex, Mrs.. Laura Berry of Kennett and Mrs. Susie Elder of Tulsa, Okla.
