Romen John Grebin was born on March 5th 1862 near Saint Donatus, Iowa, just a little south of Dubuque. He was the fifth of eleven chldren born to George Grebin and Caroline Lorenz Grebin. In about 1865, the family moved from Iowa to Carimona Township in Fillmore County, Minnesota. In 1884 he moved to Waubay, South Dakota, where he met his wife, Helena Ibach, who was working as a school teacher there. They married on October 4th 1892 and moved back to the Preston, Minnesota area in 1894. Together they raised nine children, at least two of them, Julia and Leonard becoming school teachers perhaps from their mother's influence.
