The following story was provided by FAG contributor Pam Waterworth:

Charlie Renner’s Canal Boat & Mules

Charlie Renner was a canal boat captain toward the end of the C & O Canal timeframe. Charlie’s canal boat was called the "Midnight Sneaker" & the names of his mules were Tom, Dick, Harry, Mary & Jake. They worked in teams of two & with an extra one to move the canal boat from Washington, D.C. to Cumberland & return. After Charlie’s last trip he was able to purchase the boat & used the wood to enlarge a barn for his mules at his home on Chapline St. in Sharpsburg. The barn has been removed, but before the wood was lost one of his sons-in-law took some of the wood to make picture frames. So somewhere a little piece of Charlie’s canal boat may be still around. This information was from remembrances of his daughter Ruby & one of the daughters of his son Will.
