LIFE TAKEN IN FARM ACCIDENT

Tragedy again struck in a Cheyenne County family last Saturday morning (October 23, 1937) when Vernon Keith Miller, nine year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Loyd Miller, was accidently killed. The victim was spared long suffering, however, death striking almost instantaneously when the accident occurred. The tragic event happened about mid-morning.
The victim and his brother Harold had been helping their father unload cane, and had been with him on the first two loads hauled that morning. For the third load the father had gone to the field alone, but the boys had gone to the edge of the field to meet him. The cane was being hauled in a hay rack, and when the boys reached him Loyd had stopped the horse for a rest. Thinking the boys had crawled onto the back end of the load, he started the horse, but feeling a bump of the load looked back, to see Vernon lying on the ground. Apparently the boy had tried to get on the reach of the rack and had fallen directly under the wheel, which had run over his head and fractured the skull.
The family live on the Burnham farm northeast of town a few miles. Not having a phone, the father immediately rushed to town to secure medical aid, but the nature of the injury had brought on death so suddenly that no help could be given. Funeral arrangements were made, and the body was left at the Lewis Funeral Parlors till the services, which were held Monday afternoon at the Christian Church in St. Francis with Rev. B. W. Thomas in charge.
