Jay was my husband's 2nd great-granduncle.
He was the 7th of 10 children born to Elisha Bennett & Harriet CARPENTER Bennett.
He was married to Jemima NEWBY on Oct. 1, 1865, in Almond, Portage Co., WI.
Their two children were:
Ernest E. & Nora (Carley) Bennett.

Pioneer Resident of the Town of Buena Vista Passes Away Sunday Morning
Jay Bennett, one of the pioneer residents of the town of Buena Vista, passed away at his farm home Sunday morning at 10:30 o'clock after a year's ill health suffering with heart trouble. Since Thanksgiving day he had suffered acutely and experienced a steady decline. There were also kidney complications during the last few weeks of his illness.
Mr. Bennett was born in the town of Orwell, Oswego Co., NY, on Dec. 10, 1838, being a son of the last Elisha Bennett.
The family removed to Wisconsin and settled in Winnebago county in the spring of 184, and spent ten years on a farm. In 1854, they removed to the down of Buena Vista, where the father purchased a farm of 360 acres.
On Aug. 15, 1862, Jay enlisted in Co., E of the 32nd Wisconsin volunteers and served his full three years, taking part in many minor engagements and skirmishes.
On Oct. 1, 1865, at Almond he married Miss Jamima [sic] Newby. A year later they purchased an 80 acre farm adjoining his father's place and has ever since pursued the life of a farmer adding to his farm and equiment from time to time until he had 160 acres of as fine farm land and as complete an equiment of buildings, stock, implements, etc., as are to be found anywhere in the county.
The deceased is survived by his widow, two children, Ernest E. Bennett of Buena Vista, and Mrs. S. W. Carley of this city. He is also survived by two sisters and three brothers, Mrs. Jacob Wanty of Buena Vista, Mrs. R. Palmer of Wausau, Nathaniel, Stephen, and George Bennett of Buena Vista.
The late Solomon Bennett of the same town was also a brother.
The deceased was a man of pleasant disposition and even temperament and probably didn't have an enemy in the world. He was a worthy member of society, a good citizen in every sense of the word, a successful farmer, and a beloved husband and father.
The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the family residence, Rev. U.E. GIbson of the Almond Baptist church officiating. The internment followed in the Liberty Corners cemetery.
Considering the very severe weather there was a most unusual turnout of old friends and the procession which followed the remains to the cemetery was over a mile in length.
The deceased was a member of Capt. Eckels post of the Grand Army at Plover and the pallbearers were chosen from old comrades in that post.
