ABILENE -- Viola Martin Henderson, 100, a resident of Sears Wesley Court in Abilene, Texas ended her earthly journey on Friday, March 23, 2007.She was born on February 6, 1907 in Hill County, Texas and joined with a little brother in bringing joy to William Edward Martin and Lillie Viola Martin. Following the birth of another daughter in 1908 the family moved to Westover, Texas in 1909 bought land and established a farming enterprise and welcomed the birth of seven more children. Her father died in 1930. Her mother died in 1980.

Viola graduated from Westover High School in 1924 and attended the Academy at McMurry College in Abilene, Texas and continued in McMurry College (now University) and graduated in 1929 with a Bachelor Degree in Bible and Religious Education. She was active in college organizations devoted to services related to The Methodist Church. Following her graduation she taught school and assisted her mother in caring for the younger children in the home.

During her final year in college she and Vernon Henderson became attracted to each other as both were interested in the ministry of the church as well as vitally attracted to each other. Soon after graduation they became engaged to be married but mutually agreed to wait until Vernon graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1931. They were united in marriage on September 20, 1931, and on November 12, 1931 Vernon was accepted as a Clergy member of The Methodist Church, South and they began a mutually devoted service in The Northwest Texas Annual Conference. Viola was as vitally devoted to Christian ministry as her husband throughout their years. Viola was active in all areas with the women of the church in all organizations: in the local church, district and Annual Conference. She taught Sunday School Classes in most appointments where they served.

Soon after the outbreak of World War II her husband told her he felt he should offer his service in Christian ministry to the men and women in military service as a Chaplain in the United States Navy. In November of 1943 he was accepted and became Chaplain and following a period of training in Chaplain's School in Williamson, Virginia saw service stateside for a year and over seas and was serving in the Philippines when the war ended.

Following her husband's return to ministry as pastor of local church congregations, as well as serving as District Superintendent for eleven years and four years as Associate Conference Director in office at Lubbock, Texas he accepted the Retired relation from Full-time ministry and worked for fourteen and a half years in Part-time employment in the Conference Office in Lubbock and during this period of ministry Viola was active in local services and co-worker with her husband as they were officially involved in teaching the Canterbury Sunday School Class and other activities in First United Methodist Church in Lubbock, Texas.

In August of 1992 they moved to Sears Heritage Place and joined in organizing a Methodist worship service in the Chapel of that facility on Sunday afternoons.

Viola received many honors during her years as she joined her husband in their united service in The Methodist Episcopal Church, South, The Methodist Church and The United Methodist Church as it is named today. She acknowledges that one of the highest honors came when her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren with others lending assistance in the most beautiful and joyous occasions came on their father's one hundredth birthday and their parents' seventy first anniversary of their marriage which was held at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Abilene, Texas on September 21, 2002.
