Tomorrow, Monday, will be a date meaning much in the lives of Mr. and Mrs. N.A. Bassman, highly respected and native residents of Cole County. It will be their golden wedding anniversary and they will observe the event quietly at their home.
Few citizens in this section are better known than Mr. and Mrs. Bassman. As a rural mail carrier on R.F.D. No 4 and a resident of the county for more then 30 years, he enjoys a wide acquaintance in both the city and county.
The couple was wed here February 12, 1884, and lived in Nebraska about ten years. Shortly before his marriage, Mr. Bassman and a companion rode horseback to Nebraska where the former purchased a farm at Oakland.
Tiring of their residence at Oakland, they returned to Cole County and lived on a farm near the city until 1900. After a short time, Mr. Bassman passed civil service examinations as a rural mail carrier and entered that service. He carried mail on R.F.D. No 4 for 30 years and retired when he became eligible a few years ago. During his service as a mail carrier, Mr. Bassman covered 28 miles daily with horse and buggy for about 18 years before the advent of the automobile.
Mr. Bassman was born and reared on a farm in the Honey Creek community, a son of Mr. and Mrs. George C. Bassman. She was born in Jefferson City, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Buehrle, and spent girlhood in the house built by her father at 707 Washington Street.
There are eight living children, four daughters and four sons. They are Mrs. G. W. Gordon of Kansas City, Mrs. L. A. Burkel, Mrs. G. V. Svhwartz and Sadie Bassman all of Jefferson City, and Oliver, Arthur, Winnie and Fred Bassman, all of whom are prominent business men and well known residents of this city. One child died in infancy. There are 17 grandchildren.
Mr. Bassman has three living brothers, Casper and August Bassman of Jefferson City and William Bassman residing at Claremore, Oklahoma. Two sisters and a brotherdied a few years ago. Mrs. Bassman's only sister, Mrs. Caesar Schneider, died many years ago. Her brother, Fred Buehle, is one of the leading farmers of this county.
As their fiftieth wedding anniversary draws near, Mr. and Mrs. Bassman are reported exceptionally hearty and active. They have long been members of the Central Evangelical Church.
