Oliver M. Bassman, 78, of 2034 W. Main St., chairman of the board of Mutual Savings and Loan Co., died today at St. Mary's Hospital where he had been a patient since May 4. Death was attributed to a heart attack.

Mr. Bassman was born March 14, 1886 in Oakland, Neb., the son of N.A. and Sadie Buehrle Bassman. He was married in 1913 to Miss Alma L. Moore* in Kansas City. She died in 1963.

Mr. Bassman was deputy county collector from 1908 to 1912 and from 1912 to 1920 was chief clerk at the Missouri State Penitentiary. He operated the Jefferson City Produce Co. from 1920 to 1934 when he became chief clerk in the State Treasurer's office. He became associated with Mutual Savings and Loan Co., in 1940 and was elected board chairman in 1961.

During the administration of Gov. James T. Blair he served as state savings and loan supervisor. He was a former member and president of the Jefferson City Board of Education and member and former vice-president and director of the Chamber of Commerce.

Mr. Bassman was member of the United Church of Christ and a deacon of the church. He was also a 50-year member of the I.O.O.F; a charter member of the Jefferson City Kiwanis Club; and a member of Modern Woodsmen of the World.

Survivors include his father, of Jefferson City, one daughter, Mrs. Gilbert Wright, Woodville, Tex., three brothers, Arthur A., Winnie A., and Fred C. Bassman, all of Jefferson City. Four sisters, Mrs. C.W. Gordon, Grandview and Mrs. Louis A. Burkel, Miss Sadie Bassman and Mrs. Gus Schwatz Sr., all of Jefferson City; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Central United Church of Christ, the Rev. Robert Herrmann officiating, with burial in Riverview Cemetery. Persons wishing to do so may make memorial contributions to the United Church of Christ building fund.

*Alma was the child of Armand Erhardt. After her mother married Osborne L. Moore 14 Jan 1901, she was either adopted by Mr. Moore or just assumed the name.
