Arthur Alfred Bassman, 79, of the Governor Hotel, died Tuesday at Charles E. Still Hospital. Mr. Bassman was born Oct. 8, 1893, in Oakland, Neb., the son of N.A. and Sadie Buehrle Bassman.

He worked in building trades from 1908 until going overseas with the 314th Combat Engineers, 89th Division in World War I. At the end of the war he returned to building work until 1925 when he became a traveling salesman for several large companies.

In 1947 he was appointed Jefferson City building commissioner by the later Mayor J.T. Blair. He served in that capacity until his 1963 retirement.

He received a Purple Heart and a citation from President Woodrow Wilson for being wounded in action at St. Mehell, France. As a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, he was a past commander and past chaplain of the Missouri department.

Mr. Bassman was also a member of the 89th Division Society of WW I; a past commander of Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 17; life member of Veteran of WW I; member of Central Evangelical Church; member of Gen. Bissel Post 125, Purple Heart, St. Louis; and a past secretary of the Missouri Assn. of Building Inspectors and Commissioners.

Survivors include: Two brothers, W.A. Bassman, 1116 Major Dr., and Fred Bassman, 716 Nelson Dr.; and three sisters, Mrs. Casey W. Gordon, Oklahoma City, Miss Sophie Bassman, Hallsville, and Mrs. Gus Schwartz Sr., 221 W. Atchison St.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Freeman Chapel with Rev. Robert G. Herrmann officiating. Burial will be given in Riverview Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the building fund of the Central United Church of Christ or the Still Hospital Guild.
