From Mornin' Mail, 1899, to wit: G.A. Rose has his fine new residence on South Main street so far along that the carpenters are now engaged on the finishing work. As Mr. Rose has to move from the house he now occupies by December 15 he is greatly in hopes that he can have the upstairs of the new house sufficiently completed by that time to move into the upper rooms.

G. A. Rose, 75, former head of the Rose Mercantile Company here and for many years a civic leader in Carthage, was found dead yesterday at his farm near Ellsinore, Missouri.
His sister, Mrs. Fred Hodson of Lincoln Street, was notified last night by long distance telephone of Mr. Rose's death by the coroner of Carter county. He stated that neighbors of Mr. Rose became alarmed when they did not see him about and notified him. He went to the Rose home and found Mr. Rose dead. Due to poor telephone connections Mrs. Hodson was unable to get the complete details concerning her brother's death.
Mrs. Hodson received a letter from him about 10 days ago and at that time he said nothing of being ill.
Mrs. Rose, who went to Kansas City early in December to visit her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Bathurst, recently had gone to Parsons, Kansas to visit before returning home. She arrived here this afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Bathurst came to Carthage this morning from Kansas City, to make arrangements for the funeral services and burial which will be here.

Mr. Rose was born September 15, 1864, in LaPorte, Indiana. His parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Rose, and their sons Heber and G. A. came to Carthage in 1867. About two years later R. H. Rose established the R. H. Rose store here on the north side of the square. It was later moved to the Center building then to a building on the south side where the Scott store is now located and when the building at the northwest corner of the square, now occupied by the Reynolds Hardware Store, was built, Mr. Rose moved his business there. The building was then known as the Danton block, [once owned by James Luke while the 1890 created Y M C A once occupied its 2nd floor]. It was while the store occupied this site that the Rose business was incorporated, with many of the employees stockholders.
The son, G. A. Rose, was associated with his father in the store during the last few years of R. H. Rose's life, and following his death G. A. Rose managed the establishment. He continued there until about 12 years ago [Rose's store serving citizens of Carthage for around sixty years] when the business was closed. The last several years Mr. Rose has made his home on the farm near Ellsinore, while Mrs. Rose has resided here.
Surviving him besides the wife and daughter and the sister, Mrs. Hodson are a son, Heber Rose of San Francisco, California; another sister, Miss Elizabeth Rose and a brother, Dr. Robert Hugh Rose, both of New York City, Heber, a brother of G. A. Rose died in 1882.
He is also survived by four grandchildren.
A CARTHAGE LEADER
During his business career in Carthage, Mr. Rose was a leader in all civic undertakings and served as president of the Carthage Business Men's League, which later was supplanted by the Chamber of Commerce.
One of the campaigns in which he took a prominent role was that which brought the first shoe factory to Carthage 25 years ago. The plant was established by William Kaut and C. F. Reith of St. Louis and later became the Juvenile Shoe corporation. Carthage raised about $35,000. to build the factory building on River Street for the company. This building, enlarged by several additions is now the home of the Steadley spring bed plant.
Mr. Rose also was active in all movements designed to develop farming in the area. In fact farming and stock raising interested him above all other things and led to his abandonment of the mercantile business for farming.
