THE MURULLA RAILWAY DISASTER
Twenty-seven people lost their lives and 42 injured as a result of a midnight train collision in the Upper Hunter Valley on Sept. 13, 1926 near Murrurundi, New South Wales. Breaking away from a goods train at Murulla, four cars laden with wool dashed backwards down a gradient and crashed into the oncoming north-west mail train from Moree to Sydney. Many of the passengers were children returning to school from holiday. Sometimes referred to as the Blandford railway accident, as the crash occurred before the community of Brandford, in an area bordered by both Brandford and Murulla districts.

Son of John James Jurd and Charlotte Jurd.

MASTER ARTHUR G. O. JURD.
On the train yesterday morning the body of Arthur George Oswald Jurd was also brought to Moree. This unfortunate lad was only 15½ years of age, but had already formed a determination to learn a trade and make some progress in life. He was the eldest son of Mr. John Jurd, horse- trainer, of East Moree, and was born in Inverell. Two sisters and a brother survive him, besides his parents. Arthur was employed at Lillyman Brothers' cordial factory, and was thought very highly of there. His employers wished to retain his services, but, as already stated, he wished to strike out for himself. The Railway Department had requested him to come to Sydney for a final examination as fitter's apprentice, and he was on his way to Sydney in response to this request when he met his death He was well liked by everybody, and fond of cricket and tennis. There was a very large and representative attendance at the funeral, the remains being interred in the Roman Catholic portion of the Moree cemetery. The cortege started from the church at East Moree, after a service there. Rev. Father English officiated at the church and the graveside The late Arthur Jurd was a distant relative of Stanley Jurd, who was killed by a projecting bale of wool while coming home from school in the Moree mail train about a year ago. The shops throughout the town were closed for an hour in the afternoon whilst the two funeral processions were proceeding to the cemetery. Messrs. Logan and Co. carried out the funeral arrangement in each instance.
