THE MURULLA RAIL DISASTER
Twenty-seven people lost their lives and 42 injured as a result of a midnight train collision in the Upper Hunter Valley on Sept. 13, 1926 near Murrurundi, New South Wales. Breaking away from a goods train at Murulla, four cars laden with wool dashed backwards down a gradient and crashed into the oncoming north-west mail train from Moree to Sydney. Many of the passengers were children returning to school from holiday. Sometimes referred to as the Blandford railway accident, as the crash occurred before the community of Brandford,in an area bordered by both Brandford and Murulla districts.

Son of G. F. Mallett.

Buried Sept. 17, 1926.

Auburn Victim
Sad Home-Coming

Surmounted by a wealth of beautiful tributes, from unknown friends, whose hearts went out to a lad who had passed away far from his loved ones, the casket contained the remains of Sydney Sustains Mallett, who was killed in the Blandford railway accident, was brought to the home of his parents in Auburn yesterday. It was indeed a sad homecoming for Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Mallett, who, with other members of the faily, live in a little cottage in Stanley-street, North Auburn, for six months had elapsed since they had seen their son. Like all lads of spirit, Sydney had pined for the freedom of open spaces, and, to gratify this desire, he had set off from the parental roof, for those places where life in its truest sense for a healthy vigorous lad, was most likely to be found. He found employment on Coomo Coomo Station, Quirindi, and for the past months he has according to his employer, given faithful service, and taken great interest in his work. Last week, he decided to come home to see his parents in Auburn, and joined the ill-fated train. Fate, however decreed otherwise, and, in company with so many others, he was crushed to death in the terrible smash. Mr. Mallett, who is employed by the New South Wales Railway Department, has been plate-laying lately at Strathfield station, and, as he returned to his home at Auburn after a night's work, on Tuesday morning, picked up the paper to read of the smash and his own son's death. It was a terrible blow to the family, and Mr. Mallett hastened to the scene of the disaster, where he identified the body of his son. It appears that the lad had occupied a seat in the second sleeper, and had joined the train with an elderly woman, who was killed alongside him. "My boy," stated Mr. Mallet yesterday, " must have been killed instantaneously." since was lying asleep when the crash came, just as he used to do at home, with his hands clasped behind his head. "There were no marks on his face, and when I went to identify him, I only looked at his face. When I saw he was dead, I did not want to see any more, though he must have been crushed internally." The funeral took place in the Church of England portion of the Rookwood Cemetery this morning (Friday).
