THE MURULLA RAILWAY DISASTER
Twenty-seven people lost their lives and 42 injured as a result of a midnight train collision in the Upper Hunter Valley on Sept. 13, 1926 near Murrurundi, New South Wales. Breaking away from a goods train at Murulla, four cars laden with wool dashed backwards down a gradient and crashed into the oncoming north-west mail train from Moree to Sydney. Many of the passengers were children returning to school from holiday. Sometimes referred to as the Blandford railway accident, as the crash occurred before the community of Brandford,in an area bordered by both Brandford and Murulla districts.

Son of John Angus Rich and Evelyn Mary (Berryman) Rich.

His father, mother and brothers Eric and Alan were injured in the crash.

Late Howard Rich
The funeral of the boy Howard Rich, who was killed in the railway smash, a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Rich, of Waratah, was largely attended this afternoon. The cortege moved from the home of the boy's grandmother, Mrs. L. Wen, in Bridge-Street, Waratah, and included, a number of Wanatah residents and boys of the Waratah Public school, where the boy had been a pupil. The chief mourners were Messrs. T. and J. Rich, F. La Hay, and W. H. Cooper, uncles. A service was conducted, at the home by Rev. H. H. Hobart (Anglican) and Rev. H. C. Barnes, of Meriwether. The same two clergymen officiated at the graveside in the Anglican portion of the Sandgate cemetery.
