Twenty-seven people lost their lives and 42 injured as a result of a midnight train collision in the Upper Hunter Valley on Sept. 13, 1926 near Murrurundi, New South Wales. Breaking away from a goods train at Murulla, four cars laden with wool dashed backwards down a gradient and crashed into the oncoming north-west mail train from Moree to Sydney. Many of the passengers were children returning to school from holiday. Sometimes referred to as the Blandford railway accident, as the crash occurred before the community of Brandford,in an area bordered by both Brandford and Murulla districts.
Daughter of George Frederick Doyle and Edith Margaret (Griffith) Doyle.
Her sister Margaret Pauline Doyle was injured in the crash.
SCHOOLGIRL ARMIDALE WILL NEVER SEE.
One of the saddest aspects of the train disaster is the number of school children among the victims. The scholars were returning from vacation. The cases of the Misses Janet and Margaret Doyle are typical. These little girls were attending the Church of England Girl's School, Chatswood, and boarded the ill-fated train at Quirindi. They are daughters of Mr. Doyle, of Goondel, Quirindi, a well known breeder of stud Romney sheep. It was the intention of the parents that their daughters should finish this term at Chatswood, and then next year go to N.E.G.S. at Armidale. But Janet is reported killed, and Margaret is in Murrurundi Hospital suffering from a broken collarbone and shock. — "Express."
