Rev. J. D. Rains, 71, retired minister and director of missions for Truitt Baptist Association in Waverly, Tennessee, died Wednesday at Jackson- Madison County General Hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Maple Springs Baptist Church near Mercer, where he was a former minister, with burial in the church cemetery. Bells Funeral Home has charge of services and burial.
He had been a pastor in Tennessee, Arkansas, Indiana, Kentucky and Missouri and was a World War II Navy veteran and a Mason.
Rev Rains was the son of James Robert & Rockie Mae Jeffords Rains.
Rev Rains is survived by his wife Mary Grace Busby Rains, whom he married on Oct 11, 1942 in West Memphis, Arkansas. He is also survived by two daughters, Sandra Grace Rains Meredith of Clinton, Indiana and Summer Rains Poole of Southaven, Mississippi; four sons, James Richard Rains of Waynesboro, Tennessee; Michael Randolph Rains of Duncanville, Texas; Gerry Rains of Bells, Tennessee and Rocky Ray Rains of McEwen, Tennessee; two sisters, Rachel High of Memphis and Jewel Greenelsh of West Memphis, Arkansas; three brothers, A. Z. Rains of Merigold, Mississippi; James Leon Rains of Brownsville, Tennessee and Clifton Edward Rains of West Memphis, Arkansas. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
