He was born in Montrose, on March 11, 1927, to the late Lewis I. and Ethel L. (Wood) Birchard.
Duke grew up on the Louden Hill Farm in Dimock, along with his 13 brothers and sisters. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Army. Duke Worked at IBM in Endicott, N.Y., and retired in 1984 after 30 years of service.
Duke was fond of his pets and dearly missed his beloved German Shepard, Dutch. He enjoyed the outdoors and had many great times hunting and fishing. He also loved the beach and had many wonderful vacations with his family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara (Palmer) Birchard. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Oct. 19, 2009.
Also surviving are two daughters: Andree (Birchard) Blair and husband John of New Zealand, and Nicole Birchard of Nazareth; two sons: Eric Birchard of Lawton, and Ned Birchard and wife Connie of Montrose; five grandchildren: Carly and Jordan Blair, Casey Birchard, and Ashley and Riley Birchard.
Also surviving are brothers: Elwin "Pete," Calvin "Tod," Donald "Duck," and Edwin; sisters: Barbara, Joyce, Audrey, Connie, Lois "Squeak," Elaine "Wee Wee," and Kim; and several nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by brothers, Ronald and Robert.
A Funeral Service was held Tuesday morning, May 18, at the Daniel K. Regan Funeral Home, Montrose.
Interment in the Birchardville Cemetery, Birchardville.
