Floyd H. Terpstra, 81, of Rock Valley, died Monday, September 17, 2012 at Avera Heart Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Floyd Henry Terpstra was born August 17, 1931 in Martin, SD to Jake and Flora (De Jong) Terpstra. Floyd grew up in Rock Valley and later spent some time living in Michigan. Floyd served his country as a member of the United States Army during the Korean War. On November 29, 1957 Floyd was united in marriage with Madelyn Van Wyk in Sheldon, IA. The couple lived in Rock Valley where Floyd and his brother, Agner, owned and operated the Coast to Coast Hardware Store. Madelyn died on July 16, 1978. On October 26, 1978, Floyd was united in marriage with Ruth (Disselkoen) Vugteveen in Holland, MI. They were blessed with almost 34 years of marriage, 9 children, 28 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. Floyd continued to run the Coast to Coast Hardware Store until retiring in 1993. Floyd and Ruth traveled extensively during retirement and they enjoyed wintering in Arizona for 18 years. Floyd was a charter member of Trinity Christian Reformed Church in Rock Valley, where he served often as an elder. He served on the Rock Valley City Council and Rock Valley Christian School Board. Floyd served as a chaplain at Transport for Christ in Sioux Falls. Among his many other volunteer roles, he also served at Hope Haven International Ministries.

Floyd is survived by his wife, Ruth Terpstra of Rock Valley, IA; 8 children, Dave (Linda) Vugteveen of Holland, MI; Daniel (Connie) Vugteveen of Tulsa, OK; Fonda (Will) Ellis of Wichita, KS; Jana (Steve) Cleveringa of Sioux City, IA; Paula (Dave) Brenneman of Omaha, NE; Lance Terpstra of Sioux Falls, SD; Mark (Dana) Terpstra of Rock Valley, IA; and Mark Kito (Kate) Terpstra of Hudsonville, MI; son-in-law, Porfirio Rodriguez of Honduras, Central America; 28 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Harry Terpstra of Glenwood, MN; Jake (Carol) Terpstra of Holland, MI; and Pete (Ruth) Terpstra of Zeeland, MI; two sisters, Ada Terpstra of Sioux Center, IA; and Agnes Harmelink of Sioux Center, IA; one brother-in-law, Jake (Margaret) Teunissen of Rock Valley, IA; and one sister-in-law, Nella Terpstra of Rock Valley, IA. Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, Jake and Flora; first wife, Madelyn; daughter, Debbi Rodriguez; four brothers, David, John, Clarence, and Agner; an infant sister, Florence Terpstra and a sister, Florence Teunissen.
