Former Main Street pioneer dies Friday at 93 years of age
Jake Terpstra, 93, a long-time Main Street business owner in Rock Valley, died Friday at Hegg Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Terpstra was born Aug. 24, 1894 in the The Netherlands.
He came to the United States in 1913 and married Flora De Young Feb. 1, 1917 in Marion, Mich. The couple farmed together on homesteads in Michigan; South Dakota and Washington before moving to Rock Valley in 1949 when he purchased and began operating the Coast-to-Coast store.
Mr. Terpstra was an elder at the First Christian Reformed Church, a past member of the Men's Society, and board member of the Men's Federation. He was also a past member of Rock Valley's Christian School board.
He was preceded in death by his wife Jan. 19, 1984.
Mr. Terpstra is survived by six sons: Agner and Floyd, both of Rock Valley; Harry, Brooten, Minn.; Clarence, Hawarden; and Jake and Peter, Holland, Mich.; two daughters: .Ada Terprstra, Denver, Colo.; and Mrs. Alvin (Agnes) Harmelink, Sioux Center; 33 grandchildren; and 50 great-grandchildren.
Services were Monday at First Christian Reformed Church with burial in Rock Valley's Valley View Cemetery.
