Alma was the second of nine children born to Valentine & Josephine (Braun) Haehn.

Alma attended Saint Benedict Academy in Saint Joseph, MN for two years, where she attended a business course and music classes. She was an accomplished piano player & singer who worked in her father's store in Saint Martin.

At age 31, Alma moved to Portland, OR with her friend Loretta Weir; initially working in a canning factory, peeling pears. Alma soon got a job in the kitchen at Saint Vincent's Hospital in northwest Portland. In the 1930 Federal Census, she was listed as a "tray girl".

Alma worked at Saint Vincent's for the remainder of her career, living in hospital quarters for many years and working up to the job of Assistant Dietician. She never married.

"Alma was the quintessential 'old maid aunt,' as we often referred to unmarried women in those days. She fussed & 'made-mountains-out-of-molehills' over very little things. But she was a darling in so many ways. She never forgot a birthday. We could always look forward to getting a card with, usually two dollars in it." — remembrance from a unnamed family member.

Alma died of complications from Parkinson's disease in Portland, OR at age 82.
