"Don" as he was always called, was the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Hamilton. He was born on the home farm, SW 17-37-26-W4, in the Willowdale district, on March 13, 1907. Don grew up on this farm, and took his public schooling at the local school.
After passing Grade 8, he stayed on the farm for several years and helped his father. He spent one summer working for a farmer at Vulcan, Alberta, gaining some experience of farming methods in the dry country. He spent part of one winter in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, with a friend, Len Reay, working on an Indian Reserve, where Rev. J.G. and Mrs. Meek were stationed at that time.
In 1930, Don decided to try farming on his own, and rented the W.B. Henderson farm at NE 8-37-26-W4. On August 16th of that year, he was married to Eleanor Scott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Scott of Willowdale. This was their home for thirty-one years.
Don was a lover of livestock and took very good care of them. They raised some good Clydesdale horses and Shorthorn cattle and also kept pigs. In other words, they ran a mixed farm, as it was called at that time.
Don and Eleanor had four children. Alberta, the oldest daughter, married Howard Coatham, and they had seven children. Tommy, their oldest child, died in a car accident, at the age of 20 in August 1972. Maxine married Art Robinson, and they had two children. William Donald (Bud) married Donna Otis, and they had two children. Robert Dale (Bob) married Pamela Wallace, and they had two children. Tragedy struck their lives quite early, when their first born died at a few weeks old.
Don took a great interest in youth, 4-H work, etc., and their children participated in 4-H and many youth programs. Don was on the Board of Managers of Zion Church, Willowdale. Eleanor was active in the women's group, and their children took part in all the church's youth work.
After leaving the farm in 1961, Don worked at the packing plant for awhile, and sold International Livestock Food, until his health failed. Eleanor worked for a time at Deerhome, at the Red Deer Nursing Home, and for Social Services in Red Deer.
Don died on January 23, 1978, after a year of failing health. He is buried in the Red Deer Cemetery.
