~ ~ MY Loving GRANDFATHER ~ ~

Isaiah Henry Maples Long was the
son of Rev. Robert Houston Long
and Loucinda "Holt" Long. He was
born June 20, 1873, in Greene County,
Missouri. Isaiah was the grandson of
Maples Long and Mahala "Atchley"
Long and Henry Holt and Martha "Logan"
Holt.

He moved with his parents from Greene
County to Christian Co.,1877. During
August, 1885, he was converted to faith
in Christ, at Mt. Sinai Baptist Chruch
during a revival meeting conducted by
his father and his uncle, Rev.George
Long 111. The later having been the
regular pastor of that church at the
time.
During 1887, he attended Southwest
Baptist College, at Bolivar, Mo.,pursuing
the theological course of study.
Rev. Isaiah was licensed to preach the
Gospel,Oct. 3, 1891, by the Mt. Calvary
Baptist Church, in Christian County,
Missouri.

Rev. Isaiah married Mary 'Jane'
Jones, on the 4th of Sept., 1891, in
Billings, 'Christian County, Missouri.
The couple were married for 3 years
when their first child, a baby boy was born.
The infant died after 17 day's of his birth.
They moved a few months later, into Indian
Territory, Ottawa County, Afton township.
'Jane' never fully recovered from the birth
of the baby boy, Allen Long. She died 7
months later in Afton. She is buried in
the Mount Hope Cemetery. The baby boy,
Allen, is buried in the Mount Carmel
Cemetery, Clever, Christian County,
Missouri.

During 1895-96, Rev. Long attended the
Baptist Indian University, near Muskogee,
having been sent to the school by the
Delaware Baptist Association. On June 11,
1905, he was ordained to the full Gospel
Ministry by the Missionary Baptist Church,
England Springs, Cherokee Nation.
He attended Cherokee Normal, at
Tahlequah, 1905, and taught school under
the supervision of the U.S. Governement,
1905-1906, in the Cherokee Nation.

On the 6th of September, 1896, new
records show's he married Margaret
Irene "Ketron" in Muskogee, Indian
Territory.

Children born to this union were:
Henry, died at the age of 10;
Frances
Flora
Pearl
Roy
Opal
Jewel
Ray
Ruby

At the time of his marriage to Maggie,
he was employed by his Uncle Lemuel Long,
cutting monumental stone. Many of
the beautiful tombstones he craved
can be seen in the Cemeteries of
the area.

During 1924, Rev. Long was elected
as State Representative of Delaware
County, Oklahoma, to serve in the
Oklahoma Legislature, having
been nominated on the Republican
ticket. He served as Representative
during the Tenth Legislature, being
a member of the committees on
Agricultural, Education, Charities
and Corrections, Relation to The
Five Civilized Tribes and Rural Credits.

Funeral rites for Rev. Isaiah H. Long,
65, were held at 2:30 on a Tuesday
afternoon in the First Baptist Church,
Afton, Ottawa Co.,Oklahoma.
Rev. J.W.Mckinney conducted the service.
Surviving in the home were his wife,
Maggie. Six daughters, and two sons with
families, attended their father's service.
His father, Rev. Robert Houston Long was
responsible for starting the First Baptist
Church in Afton. Rev. Isaiah placed the
corner stone in the existing church building
that stands today.

Rev. Isaiah Henry Maples Long preached
throughout Missouri and Indian Territory.
Also when it became the state of Oklahoma.
He was responsible for starting
many Baptist Churches and was pastor for
many of them. He was an original enrollee
of the Final Dawes Rolls, 1/16 Cherokee.

He loved serving the Lord, preaching and
teaching all of his life. He was a well
respected man, dearly loved by his family
and friends.
