"Joseph Allen, 83, a native of Fairfield, died late Friday evening at the Sailors & Soldiers Home in Quincy [Adams Co IL - on Missouri River, directly west of Springfield]. He had been in poor health for some time. Mr. Allen was a brother of Foster Allen, of this city [Fairfield Wayne Co IL]. A veteran of the Spanish-American War [CPL Co E 9 Regt Illinois Infantry], Mr. Allen had been nearly blind for many years. He spent considerable time at the Sailors & Soldiers Home in Quincy in recent years and also stayed some with a sister, Mrs. Ada Winslow, in Marianna, Fla.... was born in Wayne county.... Early in life he professed faith in Christ and joined the Ellen Moore Methodist church here [Fairfield Wayne Co IL]."
