[The location of the Sneed family cemetery is no longer known and there was likely more than one. This large family lived and farmed near Elamsville, Patrick Co., VA.]

The son of John Sneed Sr. and his wife Nancy Murrell.

He married 1st 14 Sep 1815, Patrick Co., VA, to Esther Turner. Surety Adam Turner.

Patrick county has been described as the place where "Appalachia (the mountains) meets Piedmont (the flat lands extending to the sea)."

Samuel was born in 1793 in Patrick Co., VA, the son of John Sneed, Sr. and his wife Nancy Murrell. He married Esther when he was twenty-two. She was born in 1796, also in Patrick Co., VA, the daughter of Adam Turner and his wife Mary Pilson, and was nineteen when she married Samuel on September 14, 1815.

Samuel's father John died sometime in Aug or Sep 1815.

Law Suit: Patrick Co., VA Superior Court Order Book, May 1809-May 1831:

Jun 1816 - A deed from Samuel Saunders to Samuel Sneed was proved by two witnesses and certified for further proof at the Patrick Co VA Court held Jun 1816. On 11 Jul 1816 at the Patrick County Court, this deed was further proved and ordered to be recorded.

Aug 1818 - Samuel Sneed served on a jury for the Patrick County Court.

Oct 1818 - Samuel Sneed was appointed surveyor of the road. His brother John was ordered to serve in his gang.

Mar 1819 - entry in the Order Book (FHL film 33346): "Isaac Adams, Jeremiah Burnett, Adam Turner, John Sneed and John Tuggle or any 3 of them are appointed Com[missioners] to examine the two roads running through Samuel Hairston's Plantation and to report whether a better road cannot be got, by partially uniting the two roads and running it the way the said Hairston shall point out."

p 61 - Oct Term, 1819

Sneed on 18 September, 1819 - ordered that the Defendant be summoned to appear here at next term to show cause why an information should not be filed against him for said charge.

Samuel and Esther's great-great-granddaughter, Billie (Sneed) Leighter many years later made a trip back with her own daughter Nancy to explore the area and try and seek out the family's old home. They found a very steep, hilly, wooded country unsuited for agriculture, with only enough arable land along the creek beds to perhaps put in a vegetable garden and run a cow or two. There were few people left there who remembered much of the early history of the neighborhood, but Patrick County had remained a part of the frontier until long after the Revolutionary War. There were a few prosperous families there in the early 1800's, but most struggled just to scrape by and feed their children. There were few cultural amenities, all of the towns were mere villages, and the county courthouse itself was so ill-supplied that for more than fifty years the criminal records of the county were kept scrawled on the walls of the two jury rooms. (They were unfortunately lost when the rooms were finally given a new, badly needed coat of paint.) But even those few records weren't even begun until 1875, after John and Sally had left Virginia.] [The part about the culture and courthouse adapted from "The History of Patrick and Henry Counties, Virginia" by Pedigo & Pedigo.]

Esther died sometime between 1840 and 1849.

Samuel married 2nd 5 Sep 1849, Patrick Co., VA to Elizabeth Moran.

In 1850, Samuel and wife Elizabeth had a good amount of land. Their next door neighbors were their son John's parents-in-law, James and Judith (Thomas) Foley.

Children:

1. John T. Sneed, b. 16 Aug 1816, Elamsville, Patrick Co., VA; m. 29 Jan 1838, Elamsville, Patrick Co., VA, to Sally Foley [daughter of James Foley and Judith Thomas]; d. 1880-1893, Slab Fork, Raleigh Co., WV.

2. Abraham Sneed, b. 24 Jun 1818, Elamsville, Patrick Co., VA; m. 24 Nov 1840 or 17 Dec 1841, Patrick Co., VA to Rebecca Turner "Polly" [b. 20 May 1823 or 1824, Patrick Co., VA; d. after 26 Apr 1862; daughter of Francis Turner, Jr., and Nancy Thomas]; he d. 26 Apr 1862 of measles in a Confederate Army hospital, possibly in Norfolk, VA.

Abraham's birth date calculated from reported age at time of death.

Rebecca may have remarried to a Short after Abraham's death.

From family researcher Lane Hash:
"I do not know where he and Becky are buried. The Franklin County death index book (by local resident Beverly Merritt) reports his date of death as April 26, 1862 and states that he died of measles. I have a copy of his will dated April 25, 1862 and marked "C.S. Govt. Hospital". Beverly
Merritt also wrote a book on Civil War soldiers from Franklin County and she reported Abraham as being in the 110th Virginia Militia, many members of which were from this county. Another fellow from the 110th Militia also died from measles - in Norfolk, Virginia on April 26, 1862. The records reported that the 110th had mustered in Norfolk
during the latter part of April. Therefore, I would assume
Abraham died in Norfolk also, probably in a Confederate
Hospital (considering the notation on his will). Considering the distance from home and the lack of technology to preserve bodies, I would further assume he was buried nearby - probably in a Confederate cemetery, although I have not
been able to locate any records of such."

The 24th Virginia Volunteer Infantry Regiment was an infantry regiment raised in Virginia for service in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. It fought mostly with the Army of Northern Virginia.
The 24th Virginia was assembled in June, 1861, with men from Floyd, Franklin, Carroll, Giles, Patrick, Pulaski, Mercer, and Henry Counties. It served under Early at First Manassas, then was assigned to Early's, Kemper's, and W.R. Terry's Brigade, Army of Northern Virginia.
The 24th participated in the campaigns of the army from Williamsburg to Gettysburg except when it was detached to Suffolk with Longstreet. Later it was involved in the engagements at Plymouth and Drewry's Bluff, the Petersburg siege north of the James River, and the Appomattox operations.
The regiment contained 740 men in April, 1862, and reported 189 casualties at Williamsburg and 107 at Seven Pines. It lost 4 killed, 61 wounded, and 14 missing at Frayser's Farm, had 8 wounded at Fredericksburg, and had about forty percent of the 395 engaged at Gettysburg disabled. Many were lost at Sayler's Creek with no officers and 22 men surrendered on April 9, 1865.
The field officers were Colonels Jubal A. Early and William R. Terry; Lieutenant Colonels Peter Hairston, Jr. and Richard L. Maury; and Majors William W. Bentley, Joseph A. Hambrick, and J.P. Hammet."

In 1870, Mary was listed alone with their children, including a daughter born in 1861 and a son born 1866 or 1867, indicating that James did return to his family after the war. Mary was living near many members of her extended family. James has not been found on the 1870 census:

James must have gone back to his wife Mary, as their last child James Jr. was born in 1875 or 1876 in Mercer Co., WV. But the reconciliation didn't last and in 1875 or early 1876, James joined others of his family in Jackson Co., MO.

James married second on 24 Feb 1876, Jackson Co., MO to Louisa Foley, daughter of James Foley and Judith Thomas Foley. They had known each other back in West Virginia, as they had grown up on neighboring farms and James' brother John was married to Louisa's sister Sally. Louisa had left her husband before 1870 and probably came to Missouri with her mother and two brothers in 1867-1870. As legal divorce was extremely difficult to obtain at this time, this situation was not unusual. James' and Louisa's spouses left behind in West Virginia hereafter presented themselves as widowed.

1900 - James and Louisa haven't been found on the census, but James at least was still living.

1870 Mercer Co., WV, Flat Top, p. 545
Mary V. Sneed, 31, VA, can read, not write,

Thomas G., 7, "
Mary A., 3, WV

The Andrew L. Cooper living with James and Louisa in 1880 was the brother of James' nephew James Marshall Sneed's [son of John T. Sneed] wife Elizabeth Emaline Cooper, who were also living in Jackson Co., MO.

1900 - James and Louisa haven't been found on the census, but James at least was still living.

In 1900, Mary was still living among her extended family, was running the family farm, and claimed to be a widow:

Louisa's first husband Dr. William D. Stroud appears to have died before 1900.

Mary Meador Sneed died 1900-1910, Mercer Co., WV.
