Rayfield was the son of Rev James "Sing" Richardson Jr and Sadie Walker Richardson. He was educated in the Houston County School System. Early in life, he worked as a farm laborer and in 1943 he worked in construction. He was Retired from Robins Air Force Base where he worked as a Civil Service Worker from 1945 to 1979.

He was a former co-founder/owner(with Charlie Nelson and Daniel Thomas) of RNT Funeral Home in Warner Robins, Georgia. After Thomas decided to sell his portion of the business, Rayfield got his good friend and cousin, Tilmon Wilson to buy into the firm. Rayfield was co- founder/owner of the Richardson Funeral Home in Perry, Georgia. After the end of the partnership in RNT Funeral Home in the mid 1980's, he purchased it and renamed it as the Richardson and Son Funeral Home.

He was a member of the Houston Mt Zion Baptist Church in Bonaire, Georgia where he was Ordained as a Deacon and served as treasurer of the Deacon Board for a period of time. He was a member of the NAACP and the Good Samaritan Lodge #5 and the Union Brothers and Sisters Lodge #1.

He was married to Ruby Lee Bryant Richardson. They had 1 son.

8 Sisters-In-Law: Clifford Richardson, Irene Richardson, Alice Davis, Emma Lee Jackson, Mildred Jackson, Jessie Mae Jackson, Carrie Jackson and Rosa Jackson.
4 Brothers-In-Law: Abraham Davis, Clyde Jackson, Fletcher Jackson and Eddie James Jackson.
2 Granddaughters: Jacqueline Jackson and Cheryl Watkins.
4 Grandsons: Carl David Richardson, James Richardson, Calvin J. Richardson and Eric Richardson.
13 Great Grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday, October 26,1993 at 2pm in the Sanctuary of Houston Mt Zion Baptist Church in Bonaire, Georgia with Rev Nathaniel Jackson officiating.
