Matthew was the son of Rev James "Sing" Richardson Jr and Sadie Walker Richardson. He was educated in the Houston County School System. He was formerly employed with the Macleond Auto Shop as a Machanic for a number of years. He was a member of Houston Mt Zion Baptist Church in Bonaire, Georgia.
He was married to Clifford Thornton Richardson.
