James was the son of Rev James "Sing" Richardson and Sadie Walker Richardson. He was educated in the Houston County School System. He later relocated to Brooklyn, New York where he became a member of the Glorious Church of God in Christ and the Hiram Grand Lodge. In June of 1989, he moved back to Georgia to be near his family.
He was married to Irene Richardson.
