Stephen was born in Tennesse to Edmond and Sarah Chitwood. He married Sarah Hodges on February 27, 1834 in Tennessee. Two daughters were born to them while living in Tennessee Frances and Lucinda. In about 1838 Stephen & Sarah along with Stephens parents and brothers Green Lee & Joel all moved to Marion County, Illinois. While living in Marion County Stephen and Sarah had 7 more children Boland, William, Stephen, James, Overton, Catherine and Harvey. William died there in Marion County.
Stephen farmed in Marion County until about 1851 when he moved the family to Collin County, Texas. Stephen and Sarah's last child Galen was born here. Once again the family farmed the land. In 1856 they lost their son Overton and then just 3 years later Stephen died.
Sarah and the children stayed awhile longer in Texas, but eventually moved on to Jasper County, Missouri.
