Galen was the 10th and last child of Stephen and Sarah Chitwood; born within 3 years of his parents moving to Collin County, Texas from Marion County, Illinois. After Galen's father dies in 1859 Sarah Chitwood and her family move to Jasper County, Missouri where many of them remained.
