Harvey moved with his family from Marion County, Illinois to Collin County, Texas when he was still a toddler. His family farmed in Texas. In April of 1859 Harvey's father died and within a few years the family moved on to Jasper County, Missouri.

On February 2, 1873 Harvey married Lydia A. Rothanberger in Jasper County, Missouri and together they had 3 children Wesley, Galen and Clara. Lydia passed away in 1916 after 43 years of marriage.

On May 31, 1917 Harvey married Mrs. Sarah Jane Cooper in Joplin, Missouri.

In the 1880 census Harvey is listed as a farmer, but by the 1900 census he is a Bank President. By 1920 Harvey has retired from banking.

Harvey died on February 18, 1933 at the age of 83 due to complications of diabetes.
