Son of Joseph Hatfield and Rachel Smith.

Married Elizabeth Mary "Betsy" Alley in 1802. Hatfield & Alley families knew each other since Jerry & Betsy were at least toddlers so they may have been childhood sweethearts.

Jeremiah drowned in the Obed River while coming home from the town of Montgomery which was then the county seat of Morgan County. He attempted to cross the River in a canoe while the river was in a high, flood stage due to recent rains and/or melting ice from upstream.

Children: 7

1. William Hatfield (1802, TN-aft. 1870) m. Elizabeth "Lizzie" Hayes (children: Greenlee, Emanuel, Andrew, Jeremiah) William's son Jeremiah should not be confused with William's younger brother Jeremiah Jr despite being of similar age & both Jeremiah's married women named Elizabeth. Documents show that they are two different individuals. Jeremiah, son of William, married Elizabeth Pittman and eventually moved to Kentucky. Jeremiah, brother of William, and his family never left Tennessee.

2. Cecilia Hatfield (1805, TN-bef. 1870, TN) m. Harris Brantley Gallaher on 7 Dec 1822, Roane Co., TN.

3. Joseph Hatfield (1809, TN-1849, TN) m. Nancy Summers (children: David, James, Samuel and Caroline. Joseph died in a rather unusual way. His brother William was subject to epileptic fits which were very severe. He had told his wife that he could not bear to see his brother William have another fit. One night William stayed all night with Joseph. On awakening next morning while they were lying in bed talking, William was seized with a convulsion. Joseph started across the room to his bed and suddenly dropped dead before reaching him.

4. Ericus "Eric" Hatfield (28 Apr 1811, TN–1894, TN) m. Polly Snow (10 children)

5. Jeremiah Hatfield, Jr. (abt. 1819, TN)

6. Fannie Hatfield (1825, TN-1840, TN). Drowned in the Obed River same as her father.

7. David Hatfield (1827, TN-2 Jan 1877, Union Co., KY) m. Ellen Bell. David joined Co. A, 48th Kentucky Mounted Infantry during the Civil War. He married Miss Ellen Bell on 6 Apr 1868, Gallatin Co., IL. They had one child Nancy. He died of pneumonia at his home in Kentucky. Ellen remarried to George Edmond Banks on 9 Aug 1878, Union Co., KY.

David had an illegitimate daughter, Lucinda, with Nancy Summers Hatfield, the widow of his brother Joseph.

***Charles Harvey Hatfield is not Jeremiah/Elizabeth's son. That opinion came from a website made by Charles' descendant who claimed that Elizabeth left Morgan County, Tennessee with Charles & his family in 1840 along with Jeremiah/Elizabeth's "younger small children", shortly after Jeremiah & Fannie drowned in 2 separate incidents, and that they all went to live in Illinois where Elizabeth in 1855 or 1858.

In reality by 1840 Jeremiah/Elizabeth's children were adults and almost all had families of their own. None left for Illinois in 1840. Elizabeth submitted an affidavit in 1844 in Morgan County in support of her mother's Revolutionary War widow's pension application. Elizabeth is on the 1850 Census report for Morgan County Tennessee & 1860 Census report for Izard County Arkansas.
