Hiram H. Hatfield resides on section 20, Eden Township and is one of the oldest settlers of Decatur County. He was born in Tennessee, in 1826. His father, Reuben Hatfield, removed with his family to Missouri in 1838, and in 1840 they came to this county, and settled upon what is now known as the Powers farm, in Eden Township. The father died July 12, 1860, aged seventy-four years. His wife Mary (Comstock) Hatfield, died September 15, 1871, aged eighty-one years. There were ten children, and all but one came to this county. August 11, 1853, Mr. Hiram H. Hatfield married Nancy L. Cox, who was born in Jackson County, Indiana, April 3, 1835. Her father, Alexander Cox, died when she was about eleven years old, and in 1851 she came with her mother's family to this county. Her mother died February 76, 1876, at the age of seventy-nine years. There were ten children, three boys and seven girls. Seven are living, Mr. and Mrs. Hatfield have had ten children - Andy J., Isaac M., George W., Marrietta, Sarah Abigail, Hiram L., Alfred B. and Charles A., are living. Hannah Jane died February 8, 1876, aged seventeen years; Herby M. died August 26, 1873, aged fifteen months. Mr. Hatfield is the oldest settler now living in Eden, Township. He and his wife have been members of the Baptist church more than thirty years. Andy J., lived in Garfield County, Nebraska; Isaac M. lives in Montgomery County, Iowa; George W. is in Howard County, Nebraska; Marietta, wife of Mark. W. D. Mitchell, resides in Eden Township; Sarah Abigail is the wife of John W. McNally; the three youngest are at home.
In 1849 Mr. Hatfield went the overland route to California, driving an ox-team and being four months on the road. He engaged in mining. in which he was quite successful, and he returned in 1851.
