Ale was the son of Joseph Hatfield and Rachel Smith. He was most likely named after Rachel's brother Ale Smith. The name "Ale" is a traditional Swedish name and the Smith family is of Swedish/German/Finnish descent who lived for multiple generations in the Swedish colony of New Sweden (Delaware). It is not a nickname for "Alexander" not a misspelling of "Ali" or "Eli".

Ale married Milly Gibson in 1798. During this marriage Ale began seeing Elizabeth Young. The two families lived in neighboring counties one of which was on the Tennessee side of the state line while the other was on the Kentucky side of the state line. Ale would travel back and forth fathering children with both women.

Ale and Milly were divorced on 4 April 1836. Three days later, on 7 April 1837, Ale and Elizabeth were married in Greene County Indiana.

His headstone was erected by his son, Armstead Hatfield.
