ANOTHER OLD AND PROMINENT CITIZEN GONE -- DEATH OF DR. ASAHEL CLAPP. . . Dr. Clapp died this morning at his residence on Main street, after but a few days' illness, in the 71st year of his age, having been seventy in October last. Dr. Clapp was a native of Massachusetts, but his father's family moved while he was yet a child to St. Alban's, Vermont, whence Dr. C. removed to this city, arriving here early in the year 1817. He has consequently been a citizen of New Albany for nearly forty-six years, for forty of which he resided in the house in which he died. He was thus closely identified with our city and its people, almost from the time of its first settlement to the present time, always taking an interest in every movement tending to promote its prosperity. Dr. Clapp had no political ambition to gratify, hence he was not a candidate for official honors. In everything relating to his profession, however, he was an enthusiast, reading every new work on medicine and surgery, and taking a deep interest in the progress of the science. He was also devotedly attached to the study of Botany and Geology, on which subjects he read much, and made many valuable reports to societies to which he was attached or of which he was a corresponding member. In seeking practical information on these subjects he had visited several portions of Southern Indiana and Northern Kentucky, and his collection of geological and botanical specimens is probably the largest and most complete in the State. When on his second visit to the United States, Sir Charles Lyell, the eminent English Geologist, visited Dr. Clapp and obtained much valuable information from him in regard to the geology of the falls of the Ohio and the vicinity. Dr. Clapp was a prominent member of the Masonic fraternity, having connected himself with Ziph Lodge when he first came here, in 1817, and always took an interest in the affairs of the order. - New Albany Daily Ledger 17 Dec 1862
