Born in New Albany, IN on Oct. 29, 1822, to parents Asabel Clapp (1793-1863; first physician in New Albany, IN in 1817) and Elizabeth Edmonds (b. 1794 in MA); siblings: Mary A. (b. @1832); commissioned MAJ / CHIEF SURG. of the 38TH IND INF on Sept. 18, 1861; resigned June 23, 1862; later served as an Assistant Surgeon at New Albany Hospital #5; after the war, retured to civilian practice in New Albany, IN
