John L. Clapp, b. 1795. d. Oct. 4, 1869. He was the son of Reuben Clapp and Hepzibah Gates (buried Montgomery Old Cemetery) . He married Lydia Hamilton, d. August 20, 1852. The Clapp genealogy had no further information on Lydia.

The Clapp genealogy had no information on John's second marriage. "lived in Montgomery, Vt. , being Postmaster of that place more than 20 years, and resigned in 1842." He inherited the farm of his father at Montgomery, Vermont. He was a Selectman at Montgomery, 1835, 1836, 1853 and Town Representative, 1844-45 and again 1850-1851. Only two children were noted in the Clapp genealogy, Charles and Nelson. Yet there was apparently another child who died in infancy (?ewel Clapp (buried Montgomery Old Cemetery) d. Sept. 21, 1827.
