I was never privileged to meet my Paternal Grandmother as she passed away before I was born. The stories I have heard over the years from her daughter Melba were that Ida loved her children very much, providing for them during the good and bad times in Oklahoma. She can be found in the 1910 census in Elmore City, Garvin County, OK first at the age of 7 living with her parents and 7 siblings. She is noted next in the Elmore City, Garvin County, OK federal census at the age of 16 along with her parents and 6 siblings. She married my Paternal Grandfather Earl Abner Pickens on September 29, 1923 in Elmore City. How I wish I had a photo of them as newlyweds. Her obituary was located in the Pauls Valley newspaper and reads as follows:

"Funeral services were conducted at Elmore City Cemetery Wednesday afternoon for Mrs. Earl Pickens.

She was born April 6, 1903 near Elmore City and lived there most of the time. She was the daughter of Mrs. G.R. Martin and the late Mr. Martin.

Mrs.Pickens passed away July 20 at Wynnewood Clinic. Services were held at the Methodist Church by Elvis Landon, minister of Santa Fe and Tilmon B. Pope of Little Rock, Arkansas.

She is survived by her husband and four daughters and three sons. Mrs. Thomas Abshure of Elmore City, Mavis, Jean, Glenda, G.W. Ray and Calvin of the home address. One child preceded her in death."
