PICKENS, Ray— Age 72, of Roseburg, Oregon, passed away on January 14, 2005, at a local hospital. He was born Eddy Ray Pickens, on October 3, 1932, in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, to Earl and Ida (Martin) Pickens. Ray moved from Porterville, California, to Roseburg in 1955. On December 9, 1955, at the Douglas County Courthouse, Ray married Shirley Graves. He belonged to the International Woodworkers Union #2949 for over 40 years. Ray worked for Roseburg Lumber Company as a Barker Operator for 31 years. Ray was affectionately called "Boppie" by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved to spend time with them, holding them on his lap for a loving hug or teasing them. Ray looked forward to his children's visits, he always had something for them to do or fix. He was a gardener, growing beautiful roses for everyone to enjoy. He liked camping and going fishing. Ray was an avid baseball fan. Family and friends knew there was no conversation when the game was on. He will be remembered as a man who loved to tease, who was always fair and honest, and who showed no favoritism, a loving husband, father, grandpa "Boppie" and friend. Survivors include his children, Gary Graves; Debra Jones ; and Larry Pickens of Roseburg; nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; sisters, Melba Abshure of Elmore, Oklahoma; Jean Starling of Troutdale, Oregon; Glenda Moore of Vail, Arizona; and brother, Calvin Pickens of Myrtle Creek, Oregon. Preceding him in death were his wife, Shirley Pickens, who passed away on May 7, 1993; daughter, Sharon Horne; sister, Mavis Ward; and brother, Grant Walter Pickens. Visitation will be held be held at 12 p.m. until 2 p.m., on Saturday, January 22, 2005, at Chapel of the Roses. A memorial service will follow at 2 p.m. CHAPEL OF THE ROSES is in charge of the arrangements.
