Benjamin Charles (went by Charles) Spaugh was the seventh of thirteen known children of Jacob Spach (became Spaugh for most of his descendants) (1768-1856) and Sarah Tesch (became Tesh) (1772-1844), who married 31 Dec 1790 at North Carolina.

Charles first married to Maria (went by Mary or Polly) Burkett (1804-1834) on 11 Mar 1827 at Putnam County, Indiana. Charles and Mary were the parents of four known children, namely:

1. Sarah Ann Spaugh Johnson (1827-1892)
2. Elizabeth Spaugh Pickett (1830-1921)
3. Eliza M. Spach (1833-1833)
4. Sanford Spach (1834-1834)

After Mary died, Charles remarried to Mary's sister, Eliza B. Burkett (1817-1875) on 24 Mar 1835 at Putnam County, Indiana. Charles and Eliza were the parents of eight known children, namely:

1. Mary Jane Spach Phillips (1836-1918)
2. Charlotte Spaugh (1841-1852)
3. Dulcena Spaugh McFall (1842-1895)
4. Sophia Spaugh Weinland (1845-1900)
5. Louisa Spaugh (1847-1867)
6. Benjamin J. Spaugh (1854-1854)
7. Martin Charles Spaugh (1856-1928)
8. Lucinda Ellen ("Ella") Spaugh Pickard (1858-1936)

In 1850 Charles, Eliza, Sarah A. (age 21), Elizabeth (age 20), Mary J. (age 14), Nancy K. (age 11, was this Charlotte?), Dulcena (age 8), Sophia (age 5) and Louisa (age 3) were living at Russell Township, Putnam County, Indiana.  In 1860 the widow Eliza (listed as Dulcenia, was this her middle name?) (age 42, born NC), Sophia (age 17), Louisa (age 16), Martin (age 13), Lucinda (age 4) and Eliza (age 2, Lucinda?) were living at Franklin Township, Hendricks County, Indiana. Why are the dates so mixed up? Was Martin really born in 1846, not 1856? After Charles died, Eliza Burkett Spaugh remarried to the Rev. Martin Hauser/Houser (1799-1875) on 21 Jun 1868 at Hope, Bartholomew County, Indiana.
