Mrs. Buker Dies at 94; Leaves 56 Grandchildren

Mrs. Caroline Buker, age 94 years and 9 months, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary Lawin, 316 Ninth Avenue Southeast, Sunday morning, July 2 at 7:30 A.M. She had suffered a stroke Friday, shortly after the noon hour, and passed away two days later when her heart failed. Previous to the stroke she had been in good health and despite her advanced years was up and about every day. In fact she had never been seriously ill in her entire lifetime and was bedridden only once when she injured her hip.

Mrs. Buker leaves two daughters and a large family tree of grandchildren numbering 56 and including 6 great-great grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren and 15 grandchildren.

She was born October 2, 1849 in Clayton County, Iowa, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Menke, who pioneered in the State of Iowa. She grew to womanhood in that county and 1865, at the age of 16, she was united in marriage to Henry Buker. The couple took up housekeeping on a farm in that county and resided there for four years, until 1869 when they migrated to Minnesota.

They came directly to Waseca County and settled on the farm in Woodville township, now occupied by Edwin Buker, which was to be their home until they retired to live in this city. Here they raised a family of seven children, all but two of them now deceased. the surviving are Mrs. Fred (Mary) Lawin of this city, and Mrs. Julius (Anna) Sommers residing south of Waseca. William, Henry, and John Buker, and Mrs. Louis (Katherine) Abbe are deceased. There was also a child died in infancy. Mrs. Buker is the last remaining member of her immediate family. Her parents never came to Minnesota, residing until their death in Clayton County, Iowa.

In 1917 Mr. and Mrs. Buker retired from the farm and came to Waseca to make their home. A year later, in 1918, Mr. Buker passed away and Mrs. Buker continued to make Waseca her home. She went to live with her daughter, Mrs. Julius Sommers for a few years but for the past seven years she had made her home with Mrs. Fred. Lawin.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday. Mrs. Sommers being an invalid, a short service was held at her home Tuesday forenoon. Services at the St. John's Lutheran church were held in the afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. Walter J. Pilgrim officiating. Burial was in the cemetery south of Meriden. The pall bearers were all great-grandsons, selected one each from the eight remaining families. They were Lester Priebe, Robert Buker, Lawrence Buker, Norbert Abbe, Laverne Abbe, Harold Abbe, Norbert Schroeder and Erwin Schroeder.
Relatives here from away were Mrs. Mary Bolduan and daughter, Clara, Milbank, S.D.; Mrs. Katherine Osterloh and daughter, Mrs. Freda Ashwager, Wilmot, S.D.; Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Bolduan, Mankato; Mrs. Herman Schuldt and daughter, Mrs. Webber, Louise Ribbe and daughters and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Minges, all of Owatonna.

[Marriage date is incorrect in the obituary. Henry and Caroline were married 1864 in Clayton County, Iowa. Birth year on the stone is also incorrect; 1849 posted is correct per baptism record.]
