Joseph Coulson Seale and his wife Mary Franklin Spring Seale married in Amite, Louisiana, and migrated to Centralia, Trinity County, Texas where she had been born and relatives lived. They had ten children (one died at birth) in Louisiana prior to coming to Trinity County. The Spring and Seale families lived around Angelina County afterward. Joseph Coulson Seale, Jr. was the son of Rev. Joseph Coulson Seale, Sr., one of the first Baptist ministers in Lousiana, and Vylindia Hodges Seale. His lineage can be traced back to colonial Virginia.
