Calvin was the eldest child of Joseph and Louisa Laxton Barlow. Per information in the book "Bunches of Barlows," Calvin was born in Wilkes County, NC. The marriage record of his parents (1828 in Wilkes County) and the 1840 Census for Wilkes County serve to document this place of birth.

Calvin was married three times:

(3) Jane Beck

Calvin enlisted in the Confederate States Army, Company I, North Carolina 26th Infantry Regiment on 15 Mar 1862 at Lenoir, Caldwell County, NC.
Per military records, the physical appearance of Calvin was: 5 feet 9 inches high; dark complexion; dark eyes; dark hair.

It is believed that Calvin died in Watauga County, NC in 1897 based upon information included in the 1900 Census for Watauga County, NC, to-wit:

Calvin's 3rd, and last, wife, Jane Beck Barlow, is listed as the head of household. Her marital status is W (Widowed) and number of years married is 4. Calvin and Jane were married on August 3, 1893 in Watauga County, NC.

Pursuant to several family members, Calvin is buried beside his third wife, Jane Beck Barlow, in the McLean Cemetery, Watauga County, NC. And Ted Shook, author of the book, "Grandfather Community," included in his book a map of the McLean Cemetery which shows that Calvin and Jane Beck Barlow are buried in the McLean Cemetery.
