Joseph Barlow was born about 1807 (per majority of Census records) in Wilkes County, North Carolina, and was the eldest son of John Barlow, Jr. and his second wife, Elizabeth [Kendall] Merritt. John Barlow, Jr. was the son of Rev. John Barlow, Sr. and Elizabeth Ann (maiden name unknown). John Barlow, Jr. was born in Virginia, and it is believed that Rev. John Barlow and his family moved from Albemarle County, Virginia to Wilkes County, North Carolina about 1779 (pursuant to land and church records found in Wilkes County, NC). The mother of Joseph, Elizabeth “Betsy” Kendall, first married John Merritt on Nov 13, 1792 in Wilkes County, NC. She married John Barlow, Jr. on April 20, 1803 in Wilkes County, NC.
On April 24, 1828 in Wilkes County, North Carolina, Joseph married Louisa Laxton, born about 1813, daughter of Thomas Laxton and Mary “Polly” Carlton.
Joseph and Louisa were living in Wilkes County, NC at the time of the 1830 and 1840 Census. Per Census
records of 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880, Joseph and Louisa were living in Kings Creek Township, Caldwell County, NC. Caldwell County, NC was founded in 1841 from parts of Wilkes and Burke counties, thus it’s possible that Joseph and Louisa always lived in the same community.
Joseph and Louisa had 10 known children:

2.Alfred Barlow (1831-1912)
(Alfred’s headstone has DOB as 1822 which is incorrect per other records)
