William, also known as Will, was the son of Calvin Barlow and Loretta “Ritta” Bentley.

Per his death certificate, William was born March 10, 1864 in North Carolina. He died July 13, 1936 at the Veterans Administration Facility in Kecoughtan, Virginia. At the time of William’s death, Kecoughtan was located in Elizabeth City County. Elizabeth City County existed until 1952 when it was incorporated as the independent city of Hampton, Virginia. The facility where William died was known as Kecoughtan VA Hospital until 1976 and is now the Hampton VA Medical Center in Hampton, Virginia.

William enlisted in the Spanish-American War on August 23, 1898 at Chester, South Carolina. He served in Company L, 2 South Carolina Infantry, and was discharged on April 19, 1899 at Augusta, Georgia.

William married Sarah Jane “Jane” Taylor, and they had seven known children: five sons: Oscar Cisero “Roe”; William Henry Harrison “Harrison” ; Howard Hardy “Hard”; General Calaway and Arthur Frank, and two daughters: Lula B. and Mary May.

Per his death certificate, William was 72 years old at the time of his death. He was a resident of the Veterans Administration Facility, Kecoughtan, Virginia, and had apparently been a resident in this same place since 1929. He was married and his wife’s name was Jane Barlow.
