Birdena was the first of six children. She spent her earlier years in Stroh, Indiana where her father manged a cement plant and her mother was a pianist for the church. Around 1914 they moved to Chunute, Kansas, for about a year then back to Indiana where they bought a farm. After selling the unprofitable farm, they moved to Kendalville, Indiana. After less than a year there, it was on to Ragland, Alabama. In 1924 they were off to Rockmart, GA where the cement company had a second plant and moved between Ragland and Rockmart until 1927 when a home was established in Rome, GA.

Birdena worked at the Ragland, AL plant in the lab and met Harry Woodring there. They were married in Gadsen, AL on June 4, 1927. Their son was born in Ragland. They later moved to Tampa, FL until Harry retired from the State Hwy Dept. then moved to Huntsville, AL. Birdena died there from injuries sustained in an auto accident.
