George was the last of six children. His parents spent the early years of their marriage in Stroh, Indiana where his father manged a cement plant and his mother was a pianist for the church. Around 1914 they moved to Chunute, Kansas, for about a year then back to Indiana where they bought a farm where they lived for about 6 years. After selling the unprofitable farm, they moved to Kendalville, Indiana. After less than a year there, it was on to Ragland, Alabama. In 1924 they were off to Rockmart, GA where the cement company had a second plant and moved between Ragland and Rockmart, where George was born, until 1927 when a home was established in Rome, GA. He was barely 16 years old when his father died in January of 1941.

George entered the Navy in 1943 where he was stationed on an Admiral's Flag Ship and sailed up and down the Eastern Coast from Maine to Cuba. The home port was Norfolk, VA. After the war he came back to Rome for a brief period before heading to California to work at a company owned by his brother, Dede, and two others. After Dede sold his interest, George, too, went to work for another company and spent the rest of his career in sales. He met Arlene Flor of Whittier, CA and they were married on July 1, 1950 in Las Vegas, NV. They had three children and seven grandchildren before they divorced on May 1, 1985. George never remarried and died from brain cancer just weeks after Arlene's death. Although she had remarried, they are at rest next to each other and with Arlene's mother.
