Dede was the fourth of six children. He spent his earlier years in Stroh, Indiana where his father manged a cement plant and his mother was a pianist for the church. Around 1914 they moved to Chunute, Kansas, for about a year then back to Indiana where they bought a farm. They lived on the farm for about 6 years with Mentor, his mother and a hired hand doing most of the farming as his father was more interested in tinkering with machinery. After selling the unprofitable farm, they moved to Kendalville, Indiana. After less than a year there, it was on to Ragland, Alabama. In 1924 they were off to Rockmart, GA where the cement company had a second plant and moved between Ragland and Rockmart until 1927 when a home was established in Rome, GA.

In 1930, at the height of the depression with work scarce, Dede joined the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Hawaii and did not come home for nine years. He was married three times. He and his third wife adopted a son in 1954. During the course of his life he also lived in Oregon, Washington, Southern California and Northern California. He was living in San Jose, CA at the time of his death which was a result of burns received in an explosion.
