Florene's given name was "Elfie" although she never used it. She told me (Karen, her grand-niece-in-law) that her mother gave her the name to honor a friend. Florene was the fifth of six children. Her parents spent the early years of their marriage in Stroh, Indiana where her father manged a cement plant and her mother was a pianist for the church. Around 1914 they moved to Chunute, Kansas, for about a year then back to Indiana where they bought a farm. Florene was born there. After selling the unprofitable farm, they moved to Kendalville, Indiana. After less than a year there, it was on to Ragland, Alabama. In 1924 they were off to Rockmart, GA where the cement company had a second plant and moved between Ragland and Rockmart until 1927 when a home was established in Rome, GA. Florene enjoyed serving with the WAACs from Feb to Aug of 1943. When Congress decided to take the WAACs into the regular army, the WACs, she decided not to reinlist so as to care for her frail mother, who was alone. They moved from Rome, GA to Whittier, CA in 1948. Her career was as a comptroller and she worked for the Rome (GA) News-Tribune and then the Whittier (CA) Daily News for many years. She was a devoted daughter to her mother, Mary U. Addicks and was much loved as an aunt to her extended family. She had an interest in genealogy, gifting us all with an Addicks-Anstett Family history compilation one year. She would have loved this Find A Grave website and I'm grateful that we can memorialize her here.In addition to the photo I've posted of her death/funeral notice from the Rome News-Tribune, there was also a memorial service held at the White-Emerson Chapel in La Habra, California on July 1, 1985 with Pastor Geoff Nelson officiating. Her brother, George H., and my husband, George "Bob" and I accompanied her remains to Georgia for her interment in the family plot next to her parents.Florene died at her home of cancer.
