She was born Sept. 24, 1910, at Detroit Lakes, the daughter of Jay and Hannah South. She grew up in Sarels, N.D., and attended Bemidji High School. In 1930, she married Walter Phelps at Cass Lake, with the couple moving to California, where Mr. Phelps later died. She entered the U.S. Air Force in 1943 and, after her discharge, married Edward Robinson in 1947 at Los Angeles. She had worked as a seamstress and owned and operated Laurel's Dress Shop and dry cleaning business in LaPuente, Calif. In 1971, she came to Bemidji where she owned and operated Midway Grocery, along the old Cass Lake Highway, until 1974. She then moved to Cass lake where she lived for two years and, after her husband's death, to Bemidji where she had lived the past 10 years. She is a past state commander of the California American Legion and a past commander of the Legion's West Covina, Calif., Post.
She Is survived by a son, Mike Robinson of Cass Lake; three sisters, Grave Harder of Curtis, Neb., and Ida Slough and LaVerne, Bemidji; three brothers, Lee South of Cohasset and Lynn and Harold South, both of Bemidji.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; two brothers and four sisters.
