Harold "Lone Eagle" South, 80, of Bemidji, died Friday, March 5, 2004, at the North Country Regional Hospital in Bemidji. The funeral was at the Evangelical Covenant Church. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery in Bemidji.

He was born Dec. 24, 1923, in Sarles, N.D., to Jay and Hannah (Irvine) South. He moved to Cass Lake as a young boy and then to Bemidji where he attended Lincoln Elementary School and Bemidji High School. He married Shirley Collins on March 17, 1946, in Superior, Wis., and they made their home in Bemidji. He worked at the box factory and Itasca State Park. He also did construction work on Bemidji State College and Bemidji Junior High School and was in charge of the cafeteria. He retired in 1988.

He enjoyed gardening. He spent every day caring for his wife in Havenwood Care Center. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers; and sisters.
