Lyle E. South, 77, Bemidji, died Monday at North Country Hospital. Funeral services were at Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home. Interment was in Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. South was born Feb. 9, 1907, at Milford, Saskatchewan, the son of Sylvester and Hannah South. The family moved to Sarles, N.D., when he was a child, and he has lived in Bemidji since 1923. He was married to Isabelle Harbin, and after her death, he married Beatrice Lorang at Fargo Jan. 28, 1945. He had worked in construction and done logging in the Bemidji area. He began working for the forestry in 1950 and was a forest manager until retiring in 1980.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mary Lou Ronning, Hendrum, and Grace Watkins, Woodward, Okla.; two sons, Joseph Mathews, Wichita, Kan., and Herbert South, Bemidji; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Lee South, Cohasset, and Harold and Lynn South, Bemidji; and five sisters, Hazel Elmers, Caliente, Calif., Grace Harder, Curtis, Neb., and Laurel (Edward) Robinson, Ida (Ernest) Slough and Laverne (Robert) Whelan, all of Bemidji.

He was preceded in death by a daughter; his parents; three sisters; and a brother.
